Mirren | Collared Button-Front Cardigan

A collar is what stops a cardigan from being a shapeless layer.

Most cardigans finish at a plain neckline and go soft from there. Mirren puts a structured collar at the top and lets the knit relax below it, with the buttons running the full length of the front.

Structured collar. It holds its shape at the neck rather than folding flat, which is the only piece of architecture on the whole garment.

Full button front. Closed it reads as a top, open it reads as a layer — decided in the morning and reversible after lunch.

Relaxed through the body. The knit drapes instead of clinging, so the collar stays the one structured thing about it.

Soft against the skin. Warm without adding weight at the shoulder, which is where heavy knitwear starts to feel like work.

Button it up and it is the whole outfit; leave it open and it is the thing over the outfit. Very few pieces in a wardrobe do both jobs properly.
